Antibacterial activity of Lamiaceae plant extracts in clinical isolates of multidrug-resistant bacteria Anais da ABC (AABC)
ASSIS,FELIPE V. DE; SIQUEIRA,FLÁVIA L.; GONÇALVES,ISABELA E.; LACERDA,RAFAEL P.; NASCIMENTO,RAFAELA A.; ARAÚJO,STHÉFANE G.; ANDRADE,JÉSSICA T.; HERRERA,KARINA M.S.; LIMA,LUCIANA A.R.S.; FERREIRA,JAQUELINE M.S..
ABSTRACT The antibacterial activity of plant extracts of the Lamiaceae family was evaluated against clinical isolates of multi-resistant Gram-negative bacteria by broth microdilution technique. Promising results were obtained considering that all extracts were active for at least two bacterial species with MIC ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 mg/mL.

Characterization of class 1 integrons and antibiotic resistance genes in multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica isolates from foodstuff and related sources BJM
Ribeiro,Vinicius B.; Lincopan,Nilton; Landgraf,Mariza; Franco,Bernadete D.G.M.; Destro,Maria T..
In recent years, an increase in the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance among Salmonella enterica has been observed in several countries, which is worrisome because S. enterica is one of the most common causes of human gastroenteritis worldwide. The aim of this study was to characterize class 1 integrons and antibiotic resistance genotypes in Salmonella enterica isolates recovered from foodstuff and related sources. Nineteen multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella enterica isolates were recovered. Higher resistance rates to tetracycline (90%), streptomycin (80%), sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (80%), ampicillin (60%) and nalidixic acid (70%) were related to the presence of the tetA, aadA, sul1/sul2, blaTEM-1 genes, and a codon mutation at position 83 of the...

Factors influencing survival in patients with multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infection BJID
Prata-Rocha,Mariana Lima; Gontijo-Filho,Paulo Pinto; Melo,Geraldo Batista de.
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii (Acb) is a rapidly emerging pathogen in healthcare settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictors of poor outcome in patients with MDR Acb. This is the first report documenting factors influencing survival in patients with MDR Acb in this tertiary hospital. This study is a prospective of the hospital epidemiology database. A total of 73 patients with 84 Acb isolates were obtained between August 2009 and October 2010 in this hospital. In the present study, the 30-day mortality rate was 39.7%. Of 84 Acb isolates, 50 (59%) were MDR, nine (11%) were pan-resistant, and 25 (30%) were non-MDR. The non-MDR isolates were used as the control group. The factors significantly associated with multidrug...

Plasmid-Encoded Multidrug Resistance: A Case study of Salmonella and Shigella from enteric diarrhea sources among humans Biol. Res.
Suh Yah,Clarence.
Salmonellosis and shigellosis are signifcant and persistent causes of diarrheal diseases among humans in developing countries. With that in mind, the current study investigates the occurrence of plasmid-encoded multidrug resistances in Salmonella and Shigella from diarrheal cases among humans. The isolates were characterized by serotyping, antimicrobial-susceptibility testing, transfer experiments and curing. The extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) was detected by the double disc diffusion synergy test (DDST). A signifcant number of the plasmid-encoded multidrug resistant (PEMDR) Salmonella and Shigella isolates were found to harbour transferable plasmid genes resistant to antibiotics like ampicillin, chloramphenicol,...

Spread of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa clones in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia in an adult intensive care unit at a university hospital BJID
Royer,Sabrina; Faria,Ana Luiza Souza; Seki,Liliane Miyuki; Chagas,Thiago Pavoni Gomes; Campos,Paola Amaral de; Batistão,Deivid William da Fonseca; Asensi,Marise Dutra; Gontijo Filho,Paulo P.; Ribas,Rosineide Marques.
Background:In Brazil, ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by carbapenem resis- tant Acinetobacter baumanniiand Pseudomonas aeruginosaisolates are associated with significant mortality, morbidity and costs. Studies on the clonal relatedness of these isolates could lay the foundation for effective infection prevention and control programs. Objectives: We sought to study the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of A. baumannii vs. P. aeruginosaVAP in an adult intensive care unit (ICU).Methods: It was conducted a cohort study of patients with VAP caused by carbapenem resistant A. baumanniiand P'. aeruginosaduring 14 months in an adult ICU. Genomic studies were used to investigate the clonal relatedness of carbapenem resistant OXA-23-producing...
